Franz Josef Glacier School is a full Primary School offering education from New Entrants to Year 8. There are 41 pupils at the school, 1 teaching Principal, 2 full-time teachers and 1 support staff member.
Franz Josef Glacier School is set in native bush, which belongs to the school and has wonderful views of the hills and snow capped mountains.
Covered walkways lead in from the gate to the main block and the classroom at the rear of the school. The court area is sealed and painted with lines for tennis, netball and basketball.
The adventure playground is a little dated but still provides an area for younger children to play. There is a track and play areas within the bush for the children to enjoy themselves with hut making and climbing trees the most popular.
The school offers a wide range of equipment for physical activity both for instruction or pleasure including bikes, rollerblades, rip sticks and skateboards. In 2024, a new concrete wheels track was built to provide more space for the students to use their wheels.
The school has a selection of devices for the children, such as chromebooks, and iPads. Year 3 to 8 students have one to one devices, and the school is on ultra fast rural broadband.
Franz Josef Glacier School contributes to South Westland Area School (SWAS) situated in HariHari 68 km from Franz Josef. Year 7 and 8 students travel to SWAS on a Friday for Technology and PE. Secondary students catch the bus in the township at 7am and return by 4.30pm. The other option for secondary education is boarding school.
Franz Josef village is situated 180 kms south of the nearest service centre of Greymouth. Franz Josef Glacier School has been identified by the Ministry of Education as the 3rd most isolated school in the country.
